Writing Murder Mystery Fiction
Weekend Workshop
at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre
Liverpool Nova Scotia

Facilitator: Susan Bunten Borgersen

Location:  Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

Each session will begin with a short talk by the instructor on the session’s topics.  Questions and discussion will follow and, from time-to-time, there will be writing assignments.  Volunteers will have the opportunity to read their assigned work to the group for a class criticism if they choose.

We will look at: types of murder mysteries, plots, suspects, crime scenes, setting and period, methods of detection, clues, motive, interrogation and confession, story craft and much more. 

Day 1

9:00 am- 9.30 am Welcome and orientation
9:30 am - 12:00 noon 
Workshop modules:
Titles and Plot:  Types of murder mysteries;Characters: the suspect; victim, witness, investigator; perpetrator; & other significant characters (the specialist etc).

12:00 -1:30 pm   Lunch          

1:30 - 5:00 pm

Workshop modules:
Setting & period; method of detection appropriate to period;  Create  a  period setting.   Story craft: Creating suspense, suspects, clues and leads. Who tells the story, why & how?

           

Day 2

9:00 am - 12:00 noon

 Workshop modules:

Discussion: providing the reader with clues in the style of current successful crime writers. The crime scene and the discovery of the crime, clues, identification of victim and witnesses.  Describe the crime scene.

12:00 - 1:30 pm   Lunch

1:30 pm – 5 pm

Workshop Modules:
The stakeout; secrets; motives; interrogation, the confession or final detection scene.  Write a scene based on one of the above. Wrap up session: research; participants’ special questions; markets; preparation for publishing; editing and (if there is time) other odds and ends.

10 minute  refreshement breaks will be taken mid sessions.
